Coin Magic Trick

Effect:

The magician shows a glass, upside down, and a coin on a sheet of colored paper. He puts a handkerchief over the glass and moves it over.He pulls the handkerchief off and Abracadabra! the coin has disappeared.

Supplies:

A sheet of construction paper (1), a clear glass, a handkerchief and a coin.

Preparation:

Trace the glass onto the sheet of paper and cut the circle out. Then tape it to the glass so when you put it onto a piece of paper the same color it blends in.

Secret:

When you do the above put the glass onto a piece of paper and just basically move the paper covered glass over the coin while the whole thing is under the handkerchief so the glass covers the coin. Pull off the handkerchief. The coin will have "disappeared.

Coin Magic Trick 2
Supplies,
  • paper or plastic cup either works fine
  • paper towel
  • a coin
  • and a hard surface
I have magic trick to share, my name is ++++What you do is place the cup over the coin and cover the cup up with the paper towel. The audience should be on the opposite side of the table and you should be sitting. Lift up the cup and make the audience concentrate on the coin, while they are not looking drop the cup on your lap still holding the paper towel (which should be in the shape of the cup) place it back on the table. When you have the audiences attention smash down the cup and drop the cup from your lap and show the audience that there is no hole in the tableand the coin is still there. Smile.

Bottle Magic Trick

Effect:

The magician asks for a volunteer from the audience who looks inside a bottle to make sure it's a normal, empty container. The volunteer returns the bottle and then examines a magic wand to ensure it is normal. The magician drops the wand into the bottle (noting how easily it falls in).He/she turns bottle over and lets go of the wand. The wand magically remains suspended in the bottle.

Supplies:

~a magic wand (could use a pencil instead) that is taller than the bottle (when you drop the wand into the bottle, part of it should still be sticking up through the opening.
~a bottle that has an opening large enough to fit the wand in (but not too big). The bottle cannot be see-through
~an eraser
If you don't have a bottle that is dark, you can put some dark paint inside the bottle and shake it around so the inside is painted.Cut a piece off the eraser, just large enough to wedge the wand into the opening of the bottle. The eraser is what makes the trick work!

Secret:

Pass the bottle to the volunteer and ask them to make sure its empty.Take back the bottle and give your friend the wand. Meanwhile, slip the piece of eraser into the bottle without anyone seeing (you can have it in your pocket until this point). You'll need to practice this a few times.Take the wand back and drop it into the bottle.Pick up the wand and bottle and turn them VERY SLOWLY upside down (mumble all sorts of enchantments while you're doing this). Pull on the wand slightly when the bottle is turning over so the piece of eraser gets wedged into the opening (you'll need to practice this a few times too).Let go of the wand... PRESTO! It doesn't fall out.Slowly turn upright again. Let go of everything and PRESTO the wand remains suspended in the bottle (it doesn't fall back down). To remove the wand, push it slightly to release the rubber and then take it out.

Envelope Magic Trick

Effect:
The magician asks for a volunteer to write down four numbers on a piece of paper. The magician asks the volunteer to TOTAL up the numbers. The magician opens a sealed envelope and it has the same number as the TOTAL!(or have the magic puppet pull out an envelope and hand it to the magician. Have the puppet "whisper" to the magician to open up the envelope.)

Supplies:

~piece of paper
~a pen
~an envelope

Secret:

Before the show, write down a four figure number that is 2 times the current year's date. For example, in the year 2000, the number would = 4000. In the year 2001, the number would = 4002Seal the paper in the envelope. At the show, ask a helper to write down the year he was born.Ask him to write down the year of an important event in his life (for example, the year he started school or the year he lost his first tooth)Ask him to write down his ageAsk him to write down the number of years that have passed since the important event(these numbers HAVE to be right *grin*... if it's been 4 years since the event and he writes down 3, the trick won't work)The years have to be whole numbers (he can't say he's 6 and a half years old)Have the assistant TOTAL the 4 numbers.Open the envelope. The TOTAL will be the same as the number you already wrote down!

Toothpick Magic Trick

Effect:

The magician shows a pan full of water with five toothpicks in the shape of a pentagon. The magician takes his magic toothpick and dips it in the center of the pentagon. The five toothpicks fly apart, breaking the pentagon!Someone from the audience says... oh, that's just what happens when you do that, it's not magic. The magician arranges the five toothpicks back into a pentagon and hands the person in the audience the magic toothpick. The person dips it in the center. Nothing happens. It really was magic!

Supplies:

  • a tinfoil pan (a pie plate or leftover Chinese food plate work well)
  • water
  • 6 flat wooden toothpicks
  • the magic ingredient: liquid dishwashing soap

Before the Audience - Preparation:

Dip one of your toothpicks in liquid dishwashing soap. Set it aside for now.Make sure your pan is clean. Rinse it well with water. Fill it quite full of water (but not so full that you're going to spill it).

In Front of the Audience - Preparation:

Arrange the five SOAPLESS toothpicks in the shape of a pentagon. Make sure the tips of the toothpicks overlap so your pentagon stays together. This can be a bit of a challenge the first time you do it, so practice arranging the toothpicks at home a few times first and consider arranging them while the audience is seating itself. Now, when the audience is settled, let them look at the pentagon. They may have to stand to do this or you may want to do the trick on the floor with the audience around you in a U-shape.Tell the audience that you've arranged the toothpicks into a special five sided shape called a pentagon and that you're going to cast a spell on the sixth toothpick to imbue it with some of your magical force so it will be able to break apart the pentagon. (big words always impress an audience *grin*)Take out the sixth toothpick (the one that was dipped in dish soap) and wave your hand over it while chanting some magical words. Close your eyes and frown a bit so it looks like you're working on putting your magic into the toothpick.Words you could chant: Alaka penta Abraka magicNow, dip the magical toothpick into the center of the pentagon (Make sure you dip the soapy end in the water and try to get it as close to the center of the shape as possible -- the soap shouldn't be visible anymore). The five toothpicks will fly apart. If you have a non-believer in the audience, offer to let them try the trick. Arrange the pentagon in the water again and hand them the magic toothpick. Let them dip it in the center. It won't work!If the audience asks you to do the trick a second time, just tell them that it takes awhile to recharge your magical force. You have to rest before you can put more of it into a toothpick, otherwise you could lose your magic forever!

Secret:

Throughout history, a lot of 'magic' has really been science disguised with a few silly words. This is one of those tricks. All things (including water) is made up of tiny things called molecules). Water molecules like each other and stick together (that's why when a bit of water falls on a table or window, it blobs together in a little droplet). The surface of the water has a layer of clingy molecules on it -- this layer is called the water'ssurface tension. The toothpicks were nice and flat so they were floating on this layer.
Remember that we dipped the sixth toothpick in dish soap? That's the real trick to this trick. The soap molecules break the surface tension of the water. This effect spreads out in an ever widening ring (like ripples in the water when you throw a rock in a lake). The molecules originally holding the toothpicks break apart. The molecules farther away from where you dipped the toothpick still have their surface tension (for a little longer) so they pull the toothpick toward them. Of course, eventually the "ripples" of soap hit those molecules too.
Once the soap is in the water, the surface tension won't come back. That's why the audience member couldn't recreate the trick. It will only work once and then you have to clean everything up and use new toothpicks to do the trick a second time. That's also why you have to be careful that your pan is well rinsed before you do the trick.

Pepper Magic Trick

Effect:

Magician has cup with pepper and water.
Volunteer puts fingers in water trying to separate the pepper.
This will not work.
Magician puts fingers in water and the water separates.

Supplies:

Water
Soap
Pepper
Cup
(make sure there is a sink nearby so volunteer can wash hand)

Secret:

Put water in a cup then regular pepper.
Before show, rub soap on your fingers (this will separate the pepper)

Rope Magic Trick

Effect:Holding a piece of rope, the magician places the ends of the rope into his hands and closes his fingers around the ends. The magician shakes the rope slightly, says a magic word, blows on his hands and drops one end of the rope. Magic! The end has a knot in it!

Supplies:

One long piece rope

Secret:

The rope already has a knot in one end... Tie a knot in one end of the rope. Hide this end with the knot in your hand and bring the other end of the rope up next to it. Shake your hand as if you're trying to knot it. Drop the end with the knot and it looks like you have tied a knot in the rope using one hand.

Sugar Cube Magic Trick

Effect:

The magician asks for a volunteer from the audience. The volunteer picks a number between 1 and 10.The magician writes the number on a sugar cube. The magician drops the cube into a cup of water and holds the volunteer's hand over the water.He/she turns the volunteer's hand over and Poof! the number is on the volunteer's hand.

Supplies:

~a pencil (must be a pencil, pen will NOT work)
~a sugar cube (you can have several for effect)
~a glass of water

Secret:

Have the volunteer pick a number.Write it onto the sugar cube with a pencil (press hard). Then, hold the cube between your thumb and one finger.Hold it so the number transfers onto your thumb and say," Now I will put this cube into the cup".Press the cube as hard as possible so the number is on your thumb.Put the cube into the water and hold the volunteer's hand above the water, make sure your thumb is in their palm so the number from your finger transfers onto the volunteer's hand.

This is a good trick to show smaller kids because they are less likely to figure out the trick.

Walk Through Paper Magic Trick

Effect:

This is more of a "dare"/puzzle than it is a magic trick, but it's still fun to do. The magician asks the audience if anyone thinks he can cut a piece of regular paper with a hole big enough for him to walk through. Then the magician snips a piece of paper along the lines on the template (he can either use the template or memorize the snips) and walks through the giant hole that's created!NOTE: I suggest if the magician memorizes the snips that he or she still have a printed template handy, just in case they forget when they're in front of an audience.

Supplies:

  • piece of paper (construction paper works well as it's a bit sturdier) with or without template printed on it (depending on if magician memorizes the snips)
  • scissors

Secret:

BEFORE THE TRICK:This trick is more of a puzzle or a dare but it's still fun to show an audience.Print out the template and practice snipping it, stretching it out and walking through it a few times.
DURING THE TRICK:Ask the audience if they think you can cut a hole large enough to walk through in a regular piece of paper.Cut the template out as quickly as possible (you don't have to be perfectly on the lines. Stretch the paper apart carefully and walk through it. You can hand the template out to the members of the audience so they can try it out at home!

Coin Bite Magic Trick

Effect:The magician borrows a coin from the spectator and is seen to take a bite out of the coin.Preparation:Take a quarter and file one side of it down so it looks like someone has bitten a chunk of it off.Method:Approach a spectator and ask them to borrow a quarter. You already have the gimmicked quarter in palm positon between your thumb and forefinger of your right hand. Take the quarter from the spectator and quietly move your finger and thumb and switch the coins.Their coin is now slid to the back of your finger.Pretend to be biting and tearing of a section of what is now your grimmiced coin and eventually tug it free of your mouth to show the spectator who should look amazed.

Flip The Coin Magic Trick

1.Lay two coins in the palms of your hands like this - the positions are very important!

Notice that the coin in my left hand is right in the middle of my palm. The coin in my right hand is near my thumb.

2.In one quick motion, flip both hands over and slap them straight down onto the table.

The coin in your right hand should get flicked across and under your left hand. The coin in your left hand should simply fall straight down.

3.Ask your audience where they think the coins are – they'll probably guess there's one under each hand.

If you move your right pinkie finger a bit, people usually guess the coins are under your right hand – then you can reveal they are wrong!

4.Reveal both coins under your left hand.

If you repeat the trick, be quick! Try not to let anyone notice the positions of the coins.

Now, you can make the coins land under your right hand instead?
What's going on?The position of the coins in your palms makes this trick work. As you rotate your hands from "palms up" to "palms down", the coin in the centre of your palm stays put and falls straight down. But the coin near your thumb travels around the centre of your palm and gets catapulted towards the other hand. With a bit of practice, it is almost impossible to see thiscoinshooting across before you slap your hand down to cover it.

The reason one of the coins gets flicked across iseasyto understand if you imagine using a table tennis bat instead of your hand. Imagine laying onecoinsmack bang in the centre of one of a bat. As you rotate the bat, the coin rotates around its own centre too, but it does not get flicked away.

If you lay the second coin right on the outside edge of the other bat, something quite different happens. This coin travels around the centre of the bat in a big semi-circle and if you rotate the bat quickly enough, it will get flicked away.

How fast the coin gets flicked across depends on how far it is from the centre of your palm and the speed with which you flip your hands over. If you want to sound smug when people ask how this trick works, just say "it's just simple rotational mechanics . baby!"

Drop The Coin From Pocket Magic Trick

The Effect: Borrow a coin andhave it marked. You say that you are always losing money through a hole in your pocket and then you drop the marked coin into your pocket. "What's weird", you say, "is that the hole isn't in this pocket (the one in which you dropped the coin), but in this one!" You lift up your other foot and the borrowedmarked coinis there! The Method: You need an extra coin. (Well, how did you think it was done?) Most people have a quarter on them, so let's say you want to borrow a quarter. On an "off moment", secretly place the extra quarter under your left foot. (I sometimes adjust my socks and stick it under the shoe.) Have someone loan you a quarter and ask them to mark it in some unusual way with a pen.Take the quarter and just drop it into your right trouser pocket. Shake your leg as if you are shaking the coin into the hole and down your leg. Then say, "What's weird is that the hole isn't in this pocket (the one in which you dropped the coin), but in this one!" You lift up your other foot and the borrowed coin is there! Then - and here's where you've gotta have guts - pick up the coin with your right hand and place it (don't drop it!) into the right trouser pocket as you pick up the other coin with the same hand. (Just switch them.) With your hand still in the pocket, look confused and say, "I'm sorry, did you lend me this or was it mine?" He'll tell you it was his and you'll return his coin (the marked one). He'll, of course, inspect the coin for the mark. It's gutsy, but it works.

Coin Magic Trick

Throw the coin backwards and forwards, from hand to hand, three or four times, in a careless manner, always taking care that the left hand is shut well over each time the coin is contained in it; and then make a feint of throwing, but, in reality, palm the coin after the method that best suits its size. The hand (in most cases it would be the left, as the majority of conjurers palm with the right; with left-handed people it would be, of course, reversed) which is supposed to receive the coin must be closed smartly, so as to make a noise similar to that caused by a coin thrown into the palm. This is effected by the ends of the two middle fingers striking the fleshy part of the thumb . If this is properly executed, the illusion is perfect, and all eyes will be directed to the left hand, when the coin can be quietly placed in a side or tail pocket, to which receptacle it may afterwards be made to pass from the left hand, where it is supposed to be, in a magical manner. I would recommend the beginner to practice this movement sedulously in private, as it teaches quick and neat palming, and will prove a most useful auxiliary to many important tricks. By "passing" a coin from place to place "in a magical manner" is implied the act ofpretendingto do so; it being an accepted axiom amongst conjurers never to "pass" anything invisibly to any given spot until the article is already safely located there. This practice will, of course, commend itself to all as avoiding untoward mistakes. To "pass" a coin from the hand, wave the wand over it, and say whatever you think will go down best with the particular audience you have before you. A sharp rap on the knuckles will complete the operation, but always take care to show the hand empty, otherwise the trick is spoilt. If the wand is not handy, pretend to rub the coin away between the fingers, or affect to give it to one of the audience.

Coin Wrap Magic Trick

Effect:Magician displays three coins,(nickels) on the table. One coin is picked up by the right hand and placed into the left hand. A second coin is picked up and placed in the left hand along with the first coin. The third coin is placed into the right pants pocket. The left hand is opened to show that the third has travelled by magic into the left hand, making a total ofthree coins! The three coins are then dropped onto the table. This entire sequence is repeated again revealing the coin has again travelled back into the left hand. The three coins are dumped onto the table. This time the magician drops one coin into his left hand and places two coins into his pocket. Now when the left hand is opened, instead of the coins travelling back into the hand, the coin transforms intoone big coin,a half dollar.Preparation:To do this you need you need four coins instead of three. Ahha, that's the secret! You also need a larger coin for the transformation. I like to use four quarters and a silver dollar. I've also used four nickels and a half dollar. Basically you want to have a definite difference in the size of the coins, so that the transformation will be more dramatic. Here's what you do before you start:(I'll assume that you're going to use four nickels and a half dollar.) Place the big coin into your right jacket pocket. The extra, (4th) nickel is hidden in the right hand. Just try to relax the hand and not grip the coin with too much force. The other three nickels are on the table.Performance:Pick up one coin from the table with the right hand, (don't let anyone see the hidden coin.) Place this coin into the left hand. Say to audience, "One coin in my hand."(As soon as the left hand has the coin - make sure to close that hand.)Grab another coin from the table. Place this coin into the left hand along with the first coin, but, at the same time secretly drop the hidden coin into the left hand as well, making a total of three coins. Say," Two coins in my hand." (Make sure to close your left hand after the coins are in it.) The audience believes that you have two coins in your left hand. Pick up the last, (apparently 3rd coin) from the table with your right hand and openly place it into your right pocket. Say, "And a coin goes into my pocket." But that's not what really happens! Here's what's really going on: you pretend to place the coin into your right pants pocket, but really come back out with it hidden in your right hand. Just let your hand relax naturally by your side."Did you see it jump back?" As soon as you say this, open your left hand and dump three coins onto the table to show that the 3rd coin has magically jumped from your pocket and back to your hand! (Everyone will be watching the three coins so the heat will be off the hidden coin it your right hand.)Now repeat the sequence again. The right hand picks up a coin and places it into your left hand; make sure not to expose the hidden coin in your right hand. Pick up another coin with your right hand and drop in into the left hand at the same time secretly adding the hidden coin. (You now have three coins in your left hand, but the audience is only aware of two.)Now this is where we change it up for the big finish. The right hand picks up the last coin from the table and places it into the right pants pocket as before, but this time you really do drop the coin into your pocket and grab the big coin, (half dollar or silver dollar; depending on what you're using) and bring your hand out of your pocket keeping the big coin hidden from the audience. (Relax your right hand by your side.) Open your left hand and dump three coins on the table to show that the coin has travelled back again!Ok, here's the final sequence.(You have three coins on the table with the big coin hidden in your right hand.) "This time we will do it backwards. One coin in my hand." Pick up one of the coins from the table with your right hand and apparently place it into the left hand. What you really do is switch the coins. The right hand drops the big coin into the left hand while holding back the small coin. This takes a little practice, but it's not hard as it sounds. The closing of the left hand around the coin will cover the fact that you've switched them. This is the most important part of this coin trick. If you can this move smoothly, the coin trick will amaze everyone! At this point the closed left hand has the big coin inside of it. (The audience thinks it has a smaller coin.) The right hand has a small coin secretly hidden in it. (There are two coins left on the table.) "And these two will go into my pocket." The right hand with its hidden coin picks up the final coins (at the same time) from the table and drops all three coins into the right pants pocket. Now you are clean. The left hand has the big coin and the right hand is empty. Casually show that your right hand is indeed empty. At this point, look at your audience and ask, "How many coins are there now in my in my hand?" Some will answer, "Two" some others will say "three." You reply, "Only one - a big one!" As soon as you say "only one", open your hand to show the transformation and dump the big coin on the table! Every time I do this people grab for the big coin. They want to check it out and make sure it's for real. The beauty of this trick is that you're clean with nothing to hide. Congratulations, you've just performed a miracle! Have fun performing with your freecoinmagic trick.

Handkerchief and Vanishing coin magic trick

Effect: The magician sticks the coin into the handkerchief, turns it over and then the coin disappears from inside the handkerchief.Secret:You secretly wrap a rubber band around your fingers and thumb. Then you place the handkerchief in that hand. With your other hand place the coin into the handkerchief. Then let the rubber band slide off of your fingers and onto the handkerchief, so it surrounds the coin and it is under the handkerchief. You then slide your hand up to the end of the handkerchief and shake it.This makes it look like the coin has disappeared. But it is really stuck in the handkerchief, held by the rubber band.

Tips and hints to help you become a successful magician:

  1. Practice in front of a mirror so you can see the trick as your audience will. Practice lots!
  2. Practice the "patter" as well as the trick. Figure out before hand what you want to say during the show. Good patter will help distract the audience just enough to keep them from guessing how you've pulled off your magical feats! Here's a start for you:

I have a magic trick for you.
It should be lots of fun.
    Pay very close attention,
And guess how it is done!

  3. Resist the temptation to tell how the trick worked... keep them guessing and they'll be even more impressed with your show.
  4. Never do the same trick more than once for the same audience. It makes it too easy for the audience to guess how it was done.
  5. Control the seating arrangements... some of the tricks require that the people be looking straight at you. Have the audience remain seated throughout the show.
  6. Wherever you can, borrow the objects from the audience... coins, pencils, napkins, etc. Borrowing from the audience makes it seem like the magician hasn't had time to do anything sneaky to the item. This makes everything seem more magical!
  7. Lovely Assistant: a lot of the card tricks (or any other mind reading type tricks) work well using a magical puppet or stuffed animal as your assistant. Try putting on an entire show where you aren't a magician at all... instead claim that you bought a puppet from an old gypsy woman and it turned out to be magic (you can make up a cool story to use as your patter). Have the puppet or stuffed animal "whisper" the answers into your ear. Having a puppet do all the work, may keep you from getting stage fright! I've included the puppet image on all the tricks that will work well this way.
